Can someone recommend a good yoga routine for beginners?

Hi everyone,

I'm completely new to yoga and I'm looking for recommendations on a good yoga routine for beginners. I've never done any form of exercise before so I'm a bit intimidated by the idea of starting yoga, but I've heard so many good things about it and I really want to try! I'm hoping to find a routine that will be gentle enough for a beginner like me but also provide a good workout.

I'm also looking for any tips for getting started with yoga - like what kind of mat I should buy, if there are any good online resources for beginners, and how often I should practice. I'm open to any and all suggestions!

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi!

As a yoga practitioner for several years, I'd suggest starting with a gentle Yin yoga routine. Yin yoga involves holding stretches for longer periods of time, which is great for increasing flexibility and relaxing the mind. You can start with some of the basic poses like forward folds, butterfly, and pigeon.

When picking a mat, consider getting a mat that is made of natural materials, like cork, rubber or jute. These materials are less harmful to the environment and provide good traction. These mats may be a bit more expensive than other mats, but the durability and eco-friendliness is worth the investment.

In terms of setting aside time for your practice, find a time of day that works for your schedule. Some people prefer to do yoga in the morning to wake up their body, while others prefer to do it in the evening to relax after a busy day. But, no matter the time, it's more important to make yoga a priority in your schedule.

Remember to listen to your body during your practice. If you feel any discomfort or pain, don't push yourself too hard. Instead, take a break or modify the pose to fit your needs.

Lastly, have patience with yourself as you begin your journey. Yoga is not just about the physical practice, but also about the mental and emotional benefits it brings. So take your time, breathe deeply, and enjoy the process!

Hey there!

As someone who has just recently started their yoga journey, I recommend starting with a Hatha yoga routine. Hatha yoga is great for beginners as it involves basic poses with gentle movements, making it a great way to ease into the practice.

When it comes to mats, I recommend getting one with enough cushioning to protect your knees, but not so padded that it’s unstable. You can easily buy a mat online or in-store from brands like Lululemon or Gaiam. A yoga towel or small sweat towel can also come in handy to wipe away sweat and maintain grip during a sweaty workout.

As for frequency, start by practicing 2-3 times a week for 30 minutes each time. Consistency is key, and it’s better to practice regularly than to overexert yourself and burn out. It's also important to remember that yoga is not just about the physical workout, but also about the mental and emotional benefits it can bring.

Lastly, don’t be afraid to modify the poses to fit your own needs and limitations. Every body is different and it's important to listen to and honor your own body.

Good luck with your yoga journey!

Hi there!

As a beginner myself, I would recommend starting with a Hatha yoga routine. It's a gentle form of yoga that focuses on basic poses and breathing techniques. I found that it helped me to build a strong foundation before moving on to more advanced practices.

I would also recommend checking out YouTube for beginner yoga videos. There are a ton of great channels out there! I personally love Yoga with Adriene - she has a huge library of videos and is very welcoming to beginners.

In terms of a mat, I would suggest getting a thicker one if you're just starting out. It'll provide more cushioning and support for your joints. I got a mat from Lululemon and I love it, but there are plenty of cheaper options out there as well.

As for how often to practice, I would say start with at least 2-3 times a week and gradually increase as you get more comfortable. Listen to your body - if you're feeling sore, take a rest day.

Good luck on your yoga journey!

Hi there!

As someone who recently started practicing yoga, I highly recommend starting with a 20 or 30 minute beginner routine. You can increase the time as you get more comfortable and experienced. Starting with short routines helps you to build consistency and discipline.

When it comes to mats, I suggest getting one with a non-slip texture to help prevent accidents during your practice. Thickness is a personal preference but I prefer a thick mat as it provides more cushioning for my feet and palms. You can easily get a good yoga mat on Amazon for a reasonable price.

In terms of frequency, it's important to practice yoga regularly but don't push yourself too hard. Starting with 3 to 4 times a week is a good place to start. You can gradually increase your practice time and frequency as your body gets more flexible.

Lastly, it's important to remember that yoga is a personal journey and everyone's experience is unique. Don't be too hard on yourself as a beginner - take your time, listen to your body, and enjoy the process.

Good luck!

Hey there!

I highly recommend starting your yoga journey with gentle poses like child’s pose, cat-cow, downward dog, and bridge pose. These poses will help you to maintain flexibility and balance, and also provide a gentle work out at the same time.

If you want to get started with yoga, there are plenty of free resources available online. YouTube is a great place to start - I personally love Sarah Beth Yoga and Yoga with Kassandra - you can easily search for “beginner yoga” videos and you’ll find a ton of options.

In terms of equipment, it’s important to invest in a good quality yoga mat for your practice. I would suggest finding one with good grip to prevent slipping and also enough cushioning for your comfort. Manduka has great yoga mats that come with a lifetime guarantee - they’re a bit pricy but worth the investment in my opinion!

As for frequency, consistency is key. Try to practice yoga for at least 30 minutes to an hour every day or every other day. Practicing at the same time every day helps to create a habit and routine.

I hope this helps!

Hello everyone!

As someone who has been practicing yoga for a while now, I'd recommend starting with a simple Vinyasa flow routine. It's a great way to integrate movement with breath, and to get your heart pumping without pushing yourself too hard. As a beginner, it's important to take it slow and steady to prevent injury or burnout.

When shopping for a yoga mat, consider investing in one that's made from eco-friendly materials. Some of my favorite brands include Jade Yoga and Manduka. Look for mats that provide good grip, cushioning, and traction for your hands and feet.

In terms of frequency, practicing yoga a few times a week is a good place to start. Make sure to also incorporate some restorative yoga poses to help your body recover and relax. And remember, be patient with yourself as you learn and grow! It takes time to build strength, flexibility, and confidence in your practice.

I also suggest finding a local yoga studio or taking an online class to learn from an experienced teacher. They can help you understand the proper alignment in poses and to deepen your practice with modifications and variations.

Happy practicing!
